The Intervention

The ocean had a strong, briny hold on his heart. I knew I had to try harder. Some childhood fishing trip trauma was behind my queasy, shivery goose bumps whenever I encountered fish. Fish were deeply revolting to me, with their glassy, blank, serial-killer eyes that could end up floating in your soup – EEEK! Naturally, I avoided the ocean.

He claimed I had Fish Aversion Disorder. He planned an intervention.

“The beach in June. Sand squishing between your toes and seaweed around your ankles. Smell it, baby. Ocean waves and steamed crabs and fucking, and ice-cold beer when your shoulders start stinging from the sunburn and saltwater.”

He was obviously overwrought. I agreed to an early morning walk. The breeze coming off the ocean smelled like blue and gold sunshine, and the waves tossed salty foam into the air like a bunch of babies splashing in a bubble bath. He picked up some seaweed, cool and green, and draped it around my wrists and in my hair. I was swimming with mermaidish impulses.

My Seahorse led me behind a dune. I fell to my knees in the sand and his briny hands slid over my hips, slick with coconut oil. He licked the salt spray from my face, then pushed into me hard. This intervention might work!

My tide was rising, my ocean bed fertile and hot, pulsing with the beat of our blood. A familiar trickle and ooze between my legs mixed our musky scents with the sand and salt beneath my cheek. I collapsed, his hard body on top of mine, his breath on the back of my neck. I turned my head. Half buried in the sand, inches away, staring at me with the glassy blank eyes of a serial killer ... EEEK!
